Main economic indicators of non-financial enterprises decelerated - 2018

Summary

In 2018, the main economic aggregates of the non-financial business sector in Portugal continued to evolve favourably, despite the deceleration observed, showing a growth in nominal terms of 6.8% in turnover, 6.4% in GVA and 3.8% in GOS (9.1%, 8.5% and 9.4%, respectively, in 2017). Persons employed increased by 4.3% (5.1% in 2017) to over 4 million people.

The births of enterprises increased by 4.1% in 2018 (-0.8 p.p. compared to 2017). By legal form, companies registered an increase of 11.0% (+8.5% in 2017) and individual enterprises grew by 2.4% (+4.0% in the previous year).

In the non-financial sector, 41 021 companies started their activity in 2018, corresponding to a birth rate of 9.9%, slightly higher than in 2017 (+0.6 p.p.). These births represented more 75 819 persons employed and EUR 2 356 million in turnover (-1.2% and +3.3% in relation to the previous year, respectively).

In 2018, the companies belonging to groups represented 7.9% of total non-financial companies, accounted for 41.1% of the persons employed, 64.8% of the turnover and 60.1% of the GVA. Compared to the previous year, these indicators grew by 8.1%, 8.9% and 4.2%, respectively.
