Where can I find information about the eating habits of the Portuguese?

  • Food Balance – includes numerous indicators relating, in particular, to the daily edible per capita consumption of food products and non-alcoholic beverages:

In addition to these, it is possible to obtain data on the daily intake available for the supply of calories, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, among others.

The following definitions apply:

    • Per capita consumption: the “average consumption expressed in kilograms or litres per inhabitant during the reference period, calculated on the basis of the population residing in the territory at mid-year or year-end, depending on the reference period observed.”
    • Edible per capita: the “value obtained by applying a percentage coefficient (edible part of a product), which varies according to the food or drink product, to the gross per capita and which is defined according to the Portuguese Food Composition Table.”
  • Balance sheets – this subtheme provides various indicators relating to human consumption (including per capita) of a range of products consumed by the resident population in Portugal, namely: meat, eggs, potatoes, fruit, pulses, seeds and oilseeds, cereals, sugar, etc.

  • Publications - Topic: Agriculture, forestry and fishing – the following publications are particularly noteworthy for obtaining the relevant information:

Portuguese Food Balance Sheet – measures food consumption in terms of food supply, covering food availability and trends in Portugal in relation to products, nutrients, and calories.

Agricultural Statistics - a yearbook that includes two thematic chapters on this issue: Supply Balances and Portuguese Food Balance Sheet.

  • Publications  - Topic: Health> Publication: National Health Survey, containing the thematic area “health determinants related to lifestyles,” which includes food and alcohol consumption.
