What is the Gini coefficient and what is it used for?

Reply

The Gini coefficient is an indicator of inequality in income distribution that aims to summarize the asymmetry of this distribution in a single value. It takes values between 0 (when all individuals have equal income) and 100 (when all income is concentrated in a single individual).

Equivalent income is a measure of income that takes into account differences in the size and composition of households. It is obtained by dividing the income of each household by its size in terms of “equivalent adults.” “Equivalent adults” is a unit of measurement of household size that results from applying the modified OECD scale. This scale assigns a weight of 1 to the first adult in a household; 0.5 to the remaining adults and 0.3 to each child within each household. For the purposes of this calculation, adults are considered to be individuals aged 14 and over. Equivalent income is assigned to each member of the household.

Net monetary income is the monetary income obtained by households and each of their members from work (employment and self-employment), other private income (capital income, property income, and private transfers), pensions, and other social transfers, after deduction of taxes due and social security contributions.

Gross Income is the income received before deduction of income tax, regular property taxes, mandatory employee contributions to social security schemes, and employer contributions to social security.

Examples of indicators:

Gini coefficient of net monetary income per equivalent adult (%) by Place of residence (NUTS - 2024); Annual

Gini coefficient of gross reported income less personal income paid tax per taxable person (%) by Geographic localization (NUTS - 2024); Annual

Gini coefficient of gross monetary income per equivalent adult (%); Annual

Gini coefficient (Early series - %); Annual
